Psicotropicus is a non-governmental organization, founded in 2003, committed to changing current drug policies. This pioneer organization played an important role in rescuing the debate on drugs from the marginalized position to which it had been relegated, and bring it to the forefront of current policy debates. We see very clear evidence that current prohibitive policies have only aggravated the “global drugs problem”, resulting in increased violence, corruption and power of the illegal drugs market.
Psicotropicus doesn’t promote the use of legal or illegal drugs – quite the contrary. However, it recognizes that it’s not the Government’s role to control what people do with their own body, let alone punish them for it. We are fully aware of the existence of drug misuse and the self-destructive potential of drug use. Nevertheless, we see that the Brazilian policies that declare war on drugs and drug users, along the same lines as US policies, are a disaster and actually impede any effective actions to address the problem.
Therefore, Psicotropicus recommends that society leaves its fear and prejudice aside and undertakes a serious effort to develop drug policies that promote tolerance and common sense instead of repression and prejudice. Let’s end this war on drugs and redirect the resources spent on military and legal/police efforts to healthcare and education. Let’s no longer insist on a policy with such a dismal cost/benefit ratio, which among several other damages has contributed to: the current “crack epidemic” among our children and youth; the discrimination drug users face in healthcare services; and the growing violence and fear on our city streets.
The use of drugs in itself doesn’t harm the rights of others. In a democratic state there is no justification for the prohibition of drugs.
It takes courage to try a new approach. We definitely need to do it.
