Dominican Republic will be hosting the 6th Latin American and 1st Caribbean Conference on Drug Policy

After being hosted in North, South and Central America, the most important place for discussing drug policies in the region comes to the Caribbean for the first time.

(August 2016, Buenos Aires) On October 5 and 6 the 6th Latin American and 1st CaribbeanConference on Drug Policy will take place at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in the city of Santo Domingo. The organizer of the conference is Confedrogas Consortium with the support of a local organizer the Center for Integral Orientation and Investigation COIN, is sponsored by Open Society Foundation, the United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation.

The recent United Nations General Assembly Special Session on Drugs (UNGASS) revealed the consensus fracture on the prohibition and punitive responses that supported the so called «war on drugs». Latin America was on the spotlight stating the need to experiment with other policies, which gained support from a large number of European countries.

A few months before the UNGASS took place, the document from the Ministerial Meeting for the worldwide problem of drugs in the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) under the presidency of the Dominican Republic, encouraged the «further development of policies and measures, focused on human beings and taking into account their inalienable rights, addressing the global drug problem impact.»

The Latin American Conference on Drug Policy is a privileged place where this debate has gone into detail, encouraging multi-sector work between policy makers, academia, civil society and those affected by the policies implemented to address the drug related problems.

Hosting this important event, at which the leading specialists in the region will converge, offers an outstanding opportunity so that Dominican Republic constitutes as a bridge towards the American continent, where many countries are implementing or debating innovative drug policies.
