Ilona Szabó de Carvalho. Member of the secretariat of the Global Commission on Drug Policy.

She is  associate cosultant to the NGO working group on the Geneva Declaration on Armed Violence and Development, and director of Institute Igarapé, a progressive social cooperation agency committed to effective and accountable community security, safety and development.

She was a member of the secretariat of the Latin American Commission on Drugs and Democracy and the Coordinator of the Disarmament (buy-back) Campaign at a civil society organization and actively engaged in the campaign of the Referendum to ban gun sales to civilians in Brazil. She has previously worked with the themes: youth and armed violence and more specifically with children of the drug trade in Rio de Janeiro, and with police reform in Latin America.

She holds a Master Degree in Peace and Conflict Studies from the University of Uppsala in Sweden and is a Specialist in International Development Studies. Graduated in International Relations and has a course on Executive Management of Operations of Disarmament, Demobilization & Reintegration of ex-combatants (DDR), at the Swedish National Defense College.
