Greco graduated in medicine in 1969 from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), and is a specialist in infectious diseases registered with the Brazilian Society of Infectious Diseases and also specialized in allergy and clinical immunology at the New York University and the University of London (1971-1973). He has taught at the UFMG Faculty of Medicine since 1991 as an Associate Professor.

He coordinates the Minas Gerais HIV Vaccine Centre, where the first HIV vaccine candidate trial took place in Brazil in 1994, through a partnership with the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation. In addition to the National STD and AIDS Commission, Greco has taken part on other national commissions, such as the National Commission on Research Ethics, the National HIV Vaccines Commission and the Ministry of Health’s Antiretroviral Therapy Advisory Committee.
